Radio and telecommunications terminal equipment may only be placed (= sold) on the Belgian (and European) market if it complies with all legal conditions.

Those legal conditions have been laid down in a European Directive, namely Directive 1999/5/EC, called the R&TTE Directive.

Further information about that directive and its consequences can be consulted in the sections
          Telecommunications => Access to the market => Equipment
          Radio communications => Equipment

All radio and telecommunications terminal equipment should at least bear the CE marking in the known form as illustrated below.

If the use of certain radio equipment is subject to restrictions (need for an individual licence or if the use is not allowed in certain European countries or regions) the CE marking should also include an alert sign. That alert sign takes the following form.

The alert sign warns users that the radio equipment cannot be used inconsiderately. Users should take account of any restrictions.
Further information about those restrictions should be available on the packaging and in the manual.
BIPT verifies whether the equipment placed on the Belgian market complies with the legislation. The BIPT officials with the mandate of criminal investigation officer will draw up a report if necessary and seize any material that does not comply with the law. Please note that any equipment purchased and imported through the Internet should comply with the regulations. In these cases too, the equipment can be seized.
