Network security

The issue of the network security is covered by:

  1. Articles 113/1 to 114/2 of the Act of 13 June 2005 on electronic communications;
  2. Commission Regulation (EU) No 611/2013 of 24 June 2013 on the measures applicable to the notification of personal data breaches under Directive 2002/58/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on privacy and electronic communications. BIPT is responsible for the monitoring of the compliance with this regulation, which is directly applicable in Belgium;
  3. Decision of the BIPT Council of 1st April 2014 laying down the circumstances in which the operators have to notify BIPT of a security incident and the terms and conditions of this notification.

With its “Network Security” Department, BIPT monitors the security of public electronic communications networks and publicly available electronic communications services. By doing so, BIPT ensures that electronic communications operators take the necessary security measures to guarantee the integrity and availability of their networks and services and that it is notified of security incidents.

Moreover, the Member of the BIPT Council who is responsible for the network security is also the sector authority for the application of the Act of 1st July 2011 on security and protection of critical infrastructures.
