When considering the quality of mobile networks and communication services, we think in terms of network availability (coverage), phone calls quality and quality of data services over the Internet, such as streaming and web browsing.

Since 2015, BIPT has been publishing online maps on mobile coverage showing where services are available outdoors. Since 2019, these maps include several availability levels depending on whether you are indoors or outdoors.

A good coverage constitutes a prerequisite for good quality services. However, this is not always sufficient. Several factors may influence the quality of experience perceived by service users. The way the operator configures its network will thus play a significant role.

By enhancing the transparency on the quality of experience on the different networks, BIPT wishes to enable consumers to make better choices. The purpose is also to help operators identify the aspects related to the quality of experience requiring improvements to their networks and possible investments.

In 2021, for the first time, the BIPT also measured our mobile networks’ quality on different train lines. Considering the importance of the IC lines, they were the project’s main focus. The successful project drives the BIPT to examine whether it would be possible to expand this project’s scope in order to have results per line as well.
