Will I lose my mobile coverage?

No, the 2G shutdown does not affect mobile coverage. Belgium has a very comprehensive 4G and 5G coverage. Only devices that are still dependent on 2G may experience problems.

Will I still be able to make emergency calls after the 2G shutdown?

Yes, provided your device and your SIM card support 4G/5G emergency calls. Therefore, it is important to check well in advance if your device meets the future technical requirements.

My mobile operator is not Orange, Proximus or Telenet. Does this shutdown also apply to me?

Yes, in addition to Orange, Proximus and Telenet/BASE, there are several other operators using their mobile networks.

When a network operator shuts down its 2G network, the same automatically applies to the customers of all operators using said network.

Your operator will inform you in due time when you need to take action.

Will I be notified?

All mobile operators will inform their customers well before the shutdown if their device or connection is likely to be affected.

Specific 2G shutdown information pages will be updated regularly, and customer service employees and stores will be ready to answer your questions.

This may be done by means of:

  • a text message,
  • an email message,
  • a letter,
  • information on the invoice,
  • the website or customer zone.

Business customers and users of IoT or M2M solutions will receive specific information as well.

Is there any cause for concern?

No, the 2G shutdown is being prepared thoroughly and is announced several years in advance.

The BIPT will monitor this evolution together with the mobile operators to ensure that consumers and businesses are informed in a timely manner.

For most users, the transition will have no noticeable consequences.

Who decides about the 2G shutdown?

The decision on the shutdown planning and execution rests with the mobile network operators.

What is the role of the BIPT?

The BIPT supports a well-considered shutdown of legacy mobile networks and monitors the process. It will ensure operators inform their customers in a timely, proper and clear manner about the consequences and measures to avoid mobile services interruptions.
