ECall is the automatic system that can contact the emergency services (112) in the event of a serious traffic accident.

As of April 2018, all new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the European Union must be equipped with an eCall system.

Should a serious accident occur, the system can automatically initiate an emergency call. The vehicle’s occupants can do so manually as well, using the in-vehicle eCall button.

Why does the 2G shutdown have consequences?

The eCall system in many vehicles produced between 2018 and the introduction of the new eCall generation, uses the 2G or 3G network.

With the shutdown of these older mobile networks, those eCall systems will no longer be able to reach the emergency services.

How do I know whether my vehicle is affected?

This depends on the make, model, year of manufacture and technical version of your vehicle.

Many manufacturers provide an online tool to check if your vehicle is impacted and whether a software or hardware update is available. This is done by entering your chassis number (VIN).

This can also be checked:

  • with your dealership or distributor,
  • with your manufacturer’s customer service,
  • on the official website of your make.

Can my vehicle be modified?

This depends on the vehicle. There is currently no mandatory European legislation for retrofitting eCall systems in vehicles. For some models, a software update is sufficient. Other vehicles may require a communication module replacement or may not allow technical adjustment.

Therefore, always check with your manufacturer or authorized dealership to find out what solutions are available for your vehicle.

What about new vehicles?

The European regulatory framework now provides for a new generation eCall (Next Generation eCall or NG eCall) using the more modern 4G and 5G networks.

New vehicles are therefore gradually being equipped with this technology, so they can make emergency calls without any problems even after the 2G and 3G shutdowns.

Does this affect the MOT test / vehicle inspection?

In modern vehicles, the eCall system is part of the safety equipment. During the periodic roadworthiness test, the vehicle’s error messages for essential safety systems are checked. The precise impact of the 2G networks shutdown on the testing requirements will be further monitored by the competent authorities.

The BIPT is following this evolution together with the relevant authorities and the automotive sector. This page will be updated as soon as this is clarified.

What can you do today?

  • Check whether your vehicle has an eCall system.
  • Check with your manufacturer or dealership if your vehicle uses 2G or 3G.
  • Ask if a software update or technical solution is available.
  • Follow your manufacturer's news about any recalls or updates.

Are you unsure? Please contact your dealership or your customer service. They have the latest information about your vehicle.
